"Oh you're an international student, if you can't find a job you can always just go back."
I have heard this sentence more times than I can count. From friends. From strangers. From well-meaning locals who genuinely thought they were being helpful.
On paper, it is a fair point. In practice, it ignores almost everything that makes staying worth fighting for. Behind every international student is a reason they are pushing to stay in Australia, and "just go back" is not the simple answer people think it is.
The three things keeping me here
For me, there are three.
I want to prove I can do it here. In a job market where international students are quietly expected to fail, walking away without a real attempt felt like accepting that verdict. That was never going to happen for me.
I met my partner here. What started as a career decision is not just a career decision anymore. Going back would not only change my LinkedIn location. It would change a relationship, a life we are building, and where our future actually is.
Australia gave me a life I genuinely love. The work-life balance. The coffee. The protein snacks (this one is not a joke). Small daily things that added up to a version of me I was not going to find again by moving back to a familiar country.
Why "going back" is not just a career decision
When a local friend says "just go back," what they hear is "just relocate to your original home." What an international student hears is "give up on the life you have spent years building."
Those are not the same sentence.
The years spent adapting to Australian culture, the friendships built in flats and university tutorials, the small routines that make somewhere feel like home, those do not port over. Going back is a full reset. Not a soft landing.
